Giurdignano : Cripta San Salvatore (Giurdignano). Arte, Storia, Cultura, Prodotti Tipici, Dove dormire, Dove mangiare in Provincia di Lecce.
All’incrocio con via Circo, il sottosuolo custodisce la cripta di S. Salvatore, un gioiello dell’architettura rupestre databile tra l’VIII ed il X secolo, periodo in cui in Terra d'Otranto il rito greco veniva ancora affidato dai monaci bizantini.
Ogni elemento architettonico interno, su cui la luce del tramonto imprime un fascino magnetico, e stato modellato scavando la roccia tufacea; cosi sono stati ricavati i quattro pilastri cruciformi che dividono le tre navate absidate, i sedili ed il so?itto, scolpito anch’esso a riprodurre tre elementi decorativi: una croce greca, un soffitto a cassettoni ed un motivo con quattro crociere a vela.
Un'iconostasi separa lo spazio riservato ai fedeli da quello destinato alla divinità ed ai sacerdoti, il naós ? il bema, mentre sulla parete dell’abside centrale si può ammirare un affresco raffigurante la Vergine con Bambino affiancata dagli arcangeli Michele e Gabriele.
L'affresco che adorna la nicchia sul Iato destro del bema riporta i resti di tre figure, tra cui un vescovo santo del quale si nota il paramento liturgico, I’omophorion, ed il Vangelo.
